More than a hotel, it’s a destination. With only 10 rooms, it almost feels like one is being handed the keys to a friend’s villa.

The hotel stands directly on Pampelonne beach — Saint-Tropez’ most iconic three-mile strip of sand — with intimate cabanas reflecting a 1960s elegance. The setting of this paradise was created with the help of American landscaper Madison Cox, a plant virtuoso who designed some of the most beautiful gardens in the world, including the Majorelle garden in Marrakech. Recreating that summer fresh feel was the basis of the transition to Épi 1959’s rebirth and return to the Golden Age of Saint-Tropez.

In 2019 Berlin-based design studio Lambs and Lions took over the artistic direction and began, under the direction of Michael Schickinger and in collaboration with Annabell Kutucu, to revamp the hotel.

Épi 1959 is not the typical hotel. It’s more a place to spend the summer, play a set on the tennis court as the sun sets, take a dip in the pool, sunbathe, or seek refuge in the shade of a tree to re-read Alain Fournier. Calm mornings at the oceanfront yoga pavilion and festive nights with an elegant soundtrack. A bottle of rosé opened by an immaculate waiter and dinner infused with floral scents from the garden.

This is a timeless place where there are no obligations, no schedules. The setting calls for a new kind of chic for those who love the beauty of simplicity.

MOVEMENT SERVICES

Music ID & Music Programming

Zone I: Lobby, Restaurant, Bar, Pool
Just a few steps from the sea and under the Mediterranean sun, Épi’s parasols create the perfect haven. For guests that are staying at Épi or for the lucky visitors that simply pass by to enjoy sea-fresh catch at ‘The Grill’, a Chotto Matte- Sashimi-creation by the pool or masterfully curated cocktails at the bar, we prepared in collaboration with Arman Nafeei a musical journey through space and time: mellow vintage tropical gems, eclectic world music, French ’40s to ’60s classics and soothing rare jazz.

Zone II: Sport Center
ÉpiPeaks, the interdisciplinary program of daily group classes, is set between Épi’s holistic sports center and nature’s pristine trails and waves. We chose a comfortably numb music direction for the sports center that invites guests to be in a liminal space between the world they know and a parallel reality with a purer, wholesome self.

Supervision & Consultancy of Audio Zoning and Installation

As music plays an essential role at Épi 1959, it is crucial to provide the best possible listening experience, sound quality and audio comfort. When we started our collaboration with the hotel in 2018, the property was equipped with a very basic sound system, limited to the restaurant area only, which restricted the guests’ general listening pleasure.

In 2019, the team decided to renew, upgrade and extend their audio system. Our role was to design, coordinate and supervise every step of this highly technical project. We defined the general audio zoning for the property, did a benchmarking of appropriate brands and suggested specific models to the interior design team. When we had the zoning approved, we brought on board Danish high-end luxury manufacturer Bang&Olufsen, custom installation specialist Origin Acoustics and London based audio installer MediaZest. Last but not least, we supervised the execution of the whole installation, from negotiating quotes with the providers on behalf of the client to providing on-site support during the installation and sound calibration of the new audio system.

Since the new audio system has been installed Épi 1959 plays music in outstanding quality and in several well- defined areas of the property using a complex yet compact audio setup of nearly 40 speakers. The speaker system and zones are automatised in terms of scheduling and volume control, and a remote app allows to have full control if needed.

Sound Installation Mix

A hotel’s entrance area always plays an important role as it gives arriving guests their first impression. Having this in mind, we created an exclusive entrance sound installation for Épi 1959 to make the arrival moment memorable.

The creative direction revolved around using different sound materials
directly linked to Épi’s history and cinematographic cultural background, such as authentic sound references from Côte d’Azur, film dialogues and on-site nature recordings in and around Épi’s property.

Waiting Line Sound Design

Still today, the telephone is an important point of contact with regular and new hotel guests. We consulted Épi to avoid the standardised sound of commercial waiting lines.

We worked on the creative direction and production of the new waiting line soundtrack in order to create something unique: using vintage microphones typically employed in the ’60s and ’70s, we recorded a pleasant, delicate and warm feminine voice which we mixed with a bespoke instrumental contemporary track with a 60s flavour.
